Fourteen C57BL/6 mice (a laboratory strain bred so that individuals within it are essentially genetically identical, which strips out inherited differences between animals) were split evenly, half held at 37 to 38 degrees Celsius (98.6 to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit) for eight hours a day for three days running and half kept at 23 to 24 degrees Celsius (73.4 to 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit), and sperm were collected from storage 16 hours after the last heating. This was done in mice, not men. Heat left the number of stored sperm unchanged and still cut how many were moving and damaged their membranes, which is the useful distinction: heat does not only reduce how many sperm are made, it also reaches sperm that already exist. That is a mechanism rather than an instruction, and what it means for a man is a question for the studies done in men.
