1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep, and which is handed back to that website on your next visit. Session cookies disappear when you close the browser. Persistent cookies stay for a set period. Local storage does a similar job, holding a value in your browser, with one important difference: it is never sent to a website automatically.

Where this page says cookies, it means both, because the distinction matters less to you than what is stored and why.

3. What is stored

The two functional values never leave your device. The analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics and only after the conditions in the next section are met.

4. Google Analytics, and when it loads

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages get read, which is how we decide what research to cover next. It tells us that a page was read. It does not tell us who read it, and we have not enabled advertising features, audience building or cross-site tracking.

If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, nothing analytics-related loads until you have agreed. The first-visit notice asks you plainly, declining costs you nothing, and if you ignore the notice we treat that as no.

If you are elsewhere, mainly the United States, analytics loads by default and this page and our privacy policy are how we tell you. You can turn it off whenever you like with Cookie settings, and we will remember.

Google Analytics collects an approximate location from your IP address, your device and browser type, the pages you view and how long you stay. Google processes this in the United States. We keep the data for 14 months. You can also block it at the browser level with Google’s official opt-out add-on, which works on every site rather than just this one.

5. Third parties

Google provides the analytics described above.

Vercel hosts the site and keeps ordinary server records of requests, which is how the site stays up and how attacks are blocked.

Klaviyo receives your email address at the moment you submit the signup form, and only then, and sends the weekly email. Nothing from Klaviyo runs on these pages while you read.

Any service we add that sets cookies will appear on this page, and the site will not build without it.

6. Our emails

The weekly email is a different thing from this website, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise. Like most email, it can record whether a message was opened and which links were clicked, which is how we judge whether an issue was worth sending. If you would rather not be counted, most email clients can block remote images, which stops open tracking, and the unsubscribe link in every email ends the whole thing.

7. Changing your mind

Withdrawing consent should be as easy as giving it. Use Cookie settings here or in the footer, and the notice comes back so you can answer again. Every major browser also lets you view and delete cookies and local storage under privacy or site settings, and you can block them entirely. Blocking storage costs you nothing here except that the first-visit notice appears every time.

8. Do Not Track

Some browsers send a Do Not Track signal. It is not a standard anyone agreed on and we do not currently act on it. The Cookie settings link does the same job with certainty.

9. If this changes

If we introduce cookies in a category currently marked as not in use, this page is updated first, including the tables above and the date at the top, our privacy policy is updated in the same change, and where the law requires consent we ask before anything is set.
