This was done in mice, not men. Heat cut the number of sperm, and when the researchers held the number of moving sperm equal between heated and unheated males, the sperm from heated males still fertilized fewer eggs. That separates two things a sperm count cannot: in these mice heat left fewer sperm and also left the survivors less able to do the job. Whether the same split holds in men is a question for the human studies.
