Impact of associated factors and adherence to Mediterranean diet on insomnia among Arab men living in Jordan.
Plain-language summary
This study set out to measure how common insomnia is among Arab men living in Jordan, and what goes alongside it. It surveyed 529 men aged 18 and older with online questionnaires covering their circumstances, diet, physical activity and sleep. Of the men surveyed, 53.9 percent reported insomnia. Before the figures were adjusted for one another, men who were unemployed, dehydrated or overweight, men who slept less than six hours a night and men who followed a Mediterranean diet closely all reported more insomnia. After adjustment three things remained: short sleepers and close followers of a Mediterranean diet reported more insomnia, and married men reported less. The Mediterranean diet result is the opposite of what the researchers expected.
Key findings
- 53.9 percent of the 529 men surveyed reported insomnia.
- Men who slept under six hours a night reported more insomnia, and so did men following a Mediterranean diet closely.
- Married men reported less insomnia.
- Men who were unemployed, dehydrated or overweight also reported more insomnia, but that showed only before the figures were adjusted for one another.
How to analyze the study yourself
- Study type
- Cross-sectional studies capture data at one point in time, useful for spotting associations but cannot determine cause and effect.
- Population
- Arab men living in Jordan, aged 18 and older.
- Funding
- Not reported
- Takeaway
- This study found that more than half of the Arab men surveyed in Jordan reported insomnia, and that sleeping under six hours a night, being unemployed, being dehydrated and being overweight each went with a higher rate of it. Closer adherence to a Mediterranean diet also went with more insomnia, which is the opposite of what the researchers expected and which this study cannot explain. If you sleep badly, time in bed is the item on that list you can change tonight, and nothing here says changing your diet would help.
