Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Acute Skeletal Muscle Recovery after Exercise.

This study looked at how going without sleep affects muscle recovery after hard exercise. Ten men did 240 hard lengthening contractions of the thigh muscles, then either stayed awake for 48 hours or slept normally for three nights, in both orders. The researchers tracked muscle strength, creatine kinase (an enzyme that leaks out of damaged muscle, so a higher level means more damage), and a panel of hormones and inflammatory signals. In this crossover each of the 10 men went through both conditions in a randomized order and served as his own control, so differences between people cannot explain the result. Ten men is enough to show which way something moved and not enough to size it.

This study found that missing two nights of sleep after a hard session did not slow strength recovery at all. The hormonal picture was mixed rather than one-directional: cortisol rose and so did the ratio of cortisol to testosterone, IGF-1 rose too, and testosterone itself showed no detectable difference. If you train hard and then sleep badly, the strength comes back on schedule, and what changed here was the hormonal and inflammatory response rather than the repair itself.
